Glutathione with vitamin C
Glutathione is a small protein — three amino acids, glutamate, cysteine and glycine — made by every cell in the body. It is the principal antioxidant inside the cell, and it is central to the second phase of liver detoxification, where it is attached to substances so that they can be excreted. It is given intravenously rather than by mouth because swallowed glutathione is largely broken down in the gut before it is absorbed. It is commonly used to improve overall health, boost the immune system, and is sometimes believed to lighten the skin.

What it does inside a cell
Glutathione neutralises reactive oxygen species produced as a by-product of normal metabolism, and is consumed in doing so. Cells continuously regenerate it. Low levels are found in a number of disease states, which is where the interest in supplying it came from.

Why intravenously
Oral glutathione is broken into its constituent amino acids by digestion, so blood levels rise little. Intravenous administration bypasses that and does raise them measurably.

Why vitamin C is given with it
The two are mutually sparing: vitamin C helps return oxidised glutathione to its active form, and glutathione does the same for vitamin C. This is well-described biochemistry, and it is the reason for the pairing.
Common questions
Does it lighten skin?
Glutathione does interfere with one step in the production of melanin, which is the biological basis of the claim. It is commonly used for skincare purposes, though whether an intravenous dose produces a visible, lasting change in colour is not scientifically established.
Is it safe?
Most people who receive it have no more than the usual discomfort of a cannula, although side effects rarely occur.
